The Bankhead Tunnel is an interesting structure located in Mobile, Alabama. It is basically a submerged tunnel that crosses the Mobile River, built as an alternative to a bridge.
The Bankhead Tunnel is noted for its engineering. Its construction process is also very noteworthy as well. To finish it, it required a number of complicated maneuvering, making it a remarkable structure in the area.
Because of its design, the Bankhead Tunnel only allows light vehicles like pickup trucks and passenger cars across. Pedestrians and other non-motorized vehicular traffic are also prohibited.
Due to these reasons, the Bankhead Tunnel was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. It was also featured and used as a location in different films, like the Steven Spielberg movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, and the “Stone Cold” by Brian Bosworth.
