The Bryce Hospital was named after the man who revolutionized psychiatry care, Peter Bryce. In 1860, Peter Bryce was chosen to supervise the newly built hospital initially named as the Alabama Insane Hospital. He was just 26 years old then and when the hospital received its first insane patient, he also introduced the ?moral treatment? that applies courtesy, respect and kindness towards the insane. He instructed the hospital?s attendants to treat the patients nicely and developed livelihood and recreational programs for the patients.

Peter Bryce served the hospital for 32 years and when he died, it was named after him. The Bryce Hospital located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama is known as the biggest and oldest stay-in facility for the mentally ill. In 1977, it was included in the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Bryce Hospital consists of 318 beds plus 100 beds at a separate facility inside the compound for housing the elderly. It is also considered as one of the most well-managed facility for the mentally ill.
