The Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge is an award winning span in Mobile, Alabama. It crosses the Mobile River and is used primarily for heavy vehicles that aren?t allowed to cross the Bankhead Tunnel. It is the only cable-stayed bridge in the entire state of Alabama.

The Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge was opened to the public in 1991. It was designed by the Volkert & Associates, Inc. in the cable-stayed design. Its name came from the combination of the names of the former Cochrane Bridge, which it replaced, and the former community of Africatown, which used to stand in the western approach of the span.

The Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge helped its designers win the National Society of Professional Engineer?s Outstanding Achievement in the USA award and the Federal Highway Administration?s Award of Excellence in Highway Design.
