The Cotaco Opera House is a historic theatre in Decatur, Alabama. It was built in 1889, during the time when Decatur was the largest city in North Alabama, even larger than Huntsville. With the city?s size, it became apparent that a theatre was necessary so there would be a venue where the city?s people could showcase their fine arts and serve as an entertainment location. So, the project commenced.

The Cotaco Opera House is the first opera house to be ever constructed in the entire state of Alabama. Sure, there were older cities in the state, but this one was the very first theatre of the sort in the entire region. It was built on a 100 by 140 foot site in the Johnston Street.

The Cotaco Opera House is now a part of the National Register of Historic Places.
