Dismals Canyon was declared as a National Natural Landmark in 1975 because of its extraordinary beauty and as a well-preserved example of America?s natural wonders. This 85-acre land hidden in Phil Campbell, Alabama is maintained and owned by a private company and is not considered as a national or state park.

The Canyon is popular for its illuminated residents called ?Dismalites?. These are actually glow worms that look like tiny blue green lights at night. Guided evening tours are offered to visitors who want to encounter these rare creatures.

The Dismals Canyon is also the home of the Dismals Branch stream, the Rainbow Falls and the Secret Falls. A hiking trail allows tourists to wander around the canyon floor and marvel at the stream, sky-high boulders, waterfalls and rich vegetation. Aside from hiking, one can enjoy swimming, camping or a comfortable cabin accommodation and some shopping in their Indian gift shop.
