Built as a way to counter the growing influence of the British in the neighboring areas, the Fort Toulouse was established by the French. It has also served as the Post of the Alabama where trading took place as well. up to 50 French Colonial Marines were housed in the site.

Due to a series of events that led to the loss of the French colonizers, the Fort Toulouse was left abandoned around the 1760s. It was only used again during the War of 1812, when General Andrew Jackson camped in the site.
