Also commonly known as the Col. J. R. Hawthorne House, the Hawthorne House is a historic home in Pine Apple, Alabama. It was once a plantation house built in 1854 for Joseph Richard Hawthorne. The builder Ezra Plumb worked on the house for the plantation owner, who also has several other large plantations in Conecuh and Wilcox counties.

The Hawthorne House was sold out of the family when Col. Hawthorne died in 1889. It transferred ownership a couple of times, but it was bought again by Hawthorne descendants Gladys Hawthorne Whitaker and brother, New York physician, Dr. Julian Hawthorne in 1935. The property stayed with the two until Whitaker?s death in 1980, when it was acquired by Dr. Edward Childs.

The Hawthorne House was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey and was added to the National Register of Historic Places and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
