The Marion Military Institute is a historic location in Marion, Alabama. It is the state military college of Alabama created in 1842, as the Howard College. It was initially the Howard English & Classical School established by the Alabama Baptist Convention and had Dr. SS Sherman as president.
The Marion Military Institute started as such in 1887, when the Howard College moved to Birmingham and became Samford University. A number of students, along with Colonel J. T. Murfee, the president of the Howard College at the time, decided to stay in Marion, so they organized the Marion Military Institute.
The US Army ROTC program was first offered here in 1916 in celebration of its designation as an ?Honor Military School with Distinction?.
