The Monterey Place is a historic home in Mobile, Alabama. It is also commonly known as the Shepard House.
Built in 1897, the Monterey Place became the residence of Charles Martin Shepard. Shepard worked for the Mobile and Ohio Railroad in the city as the general passenger agent. In 1910, the house was used as a boarding school by Shepard’s daughters, Kate and Isabel.
The Monterey Place is noted for its excellent architecture made with elaborate Queen Anne details. It has 11 fireplaces and stunning stained glass windows. In 2002, it was opened as the Kate Shepard Bed and Breakfast. Aside from being a part of the National Historic Registry, it was also featured in the TV show “If Walls Could Talk”.
