The Museum of Mobile, also called the Southern Market, was built between 1855 and 1857 and is now a National Landmark. Visitors can explore about 300 years of Mobile history and culture through its modern facilities, such as audio and interactive exhibits that engages the visitors while learning.

The Museum of Mobile which was also the Old City Hall was opened in 1858 with three main functions: to accommodate the Mayor of Mobile?s office where the City Council also met located at the top floor of the building. It also served as headquarters to a few militia units, such as the Mobile Cadets, which served during the Civil War and long after that. Lastly, and the most important, the Old City Hall was a venue for licensed entrepreneurs to trade meat, vegetables, seafood, and fruit, found on the ground floor which is today the museum atrium.
