Also known as the SA-500D, the Saturn V Dynamic Test Vehicle is a prototype Saturn V rocket. It was built by NASA so they can test the rocket?s performance when a launch is simulated. It is a National Historic Landmark as per declaration on February 1987.
The Saturn V Dynamic Test Vehicle may not exactly be something made to go outerspace, but it was designed as a test subject whether the rocket could survive the launch. This very unit never flew, but it played a significant role in developing the Saturn V rocket, which became a part of the Apollo program and took the first men to the moon.
The Saturn V Dynamic Test Vehicle can be viewed at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama today.
