The Thomaston Colored Institute is a historic building Thomaston, Alabama. It was built in 1910 and served as a private school known as the Thomaston Academy. It served African American children under the supervision and management of the West Alabama Primitive Baptist Association.

The Thomaston Colored Institute has played a huge role in the community of the African Americans during the first half of the 20th century. It provided the only educational venue for the black population in the town of Thomaston, making it an integral part of the area?s growth.

Sadly, the handsome two story brick building has been left uncared for since the 1970s, so aside from it National Register of Historic Places? listing, it was also added to the Alabama Historical Commission?s Places in Peril list in 2000.
