Wiregrass Museum of Art offers an art experience spiced up the Southern way. The museum's 500-plus-piece collection's mission is to provide an art education and experience to its home: Dothan, Alabama and the surrounding Wiregrass region. The museum's current location was once the spot where the Dothan Municipal Light and Water Plant stood - a mark in the map listed in the 1991 National Register of Historic Places. The Wiregrass Museum of Art is now the flagship of the arts in the region.

Behind the facade of the museum lies an interesting history. The idea of building a museum in Dothan was sparked when a 1986 national magazine included the city in a "Worse Places to Live in the U.S.? list. Among the reasons behind the listing was that the Dothan did not have its own museum. Larry Register, the museum's mayor during that time, appointed a committee to study whether building a museum was feasible in the city. Renovations began and the Wiregrass Museum of Art was finally born. It opened its doors to the public in 1991.

The Museum's exhibits focus on American and Southern decorative, design and fine arts from the 1940s to the present. American literary works & Alabama and women artists are among the showcases in the Museum. These works include lithographs by Alexander Calder and Ellsworth Kelly, pieces by contemporary artist Frank Stella and world-renowned local artist Dale Kennington's works. Every year, the museum mounts 30 exhibitions in its galleries. Apart from the museum galleries, a 12,000 square foot conference center including a Great Hall is among the Museum's facilities, available for renting for corporate and private events, not to mention weddings.

Wiregrass Museum of Art has not stopped growing since its opening, expanding continuously. The museum has completed most of the phases of a construction plan. These phases include 18,000 square feet of gallery space, an exhibit preparation area, a storage vault and additional conference center. A new educational wing and entrance is on its way soon. The Wiregrass Museum of Art always makes sure to guarantee a Southern art experience one can't forget.
