Built in 1942, the Adak Army Base and Adak Naval Operating Base are two historic installations in the state of Alaska. It was designed to be the staging area for American assaults during the Second World War.
The Adak Army Base and Adak Naval Operating Base were the westernmost military bases in the country for a short while after their completion. Thanks to their location, they allowed attacks to the islands of Attu and Kiska, two Aleutian Islands held by the Japanese at the time, successful.
Sadly, when the Navy gave the installations up, the lands were purchased by developers. Although, the Adak Army Base and Adak Naval Operating Base are designated as National Historic Landmarks, the chances of the site being preserved are dim.
