The Clausen Memorial Museum houses exhibits and offers programs that help its visitors understand the history of Petersburg. It depicts the area?s lifestyle of the past, showing that its people have long fished and gathered food.
The Museum, established in 1968, is dedicated to the preservation of the history of Petersburg and to its storytelling of the people who have lived and worked in the region including its surrounding areas. It serves as a standing proof of the area?s history involving hundreds of fishermen and laborers who flocked to Petersburg to make a living through fishing. Eventually, it turned Petersburg as the home for one of Alaska?s largest fishing fleets.
Near the Museum, there is also a fish weir site and numerous artifacts that show the abundance of plant and animal life.
