The Fortress of the Bear is more of a zoo specializing in providing a protected and natural habitat for the diminishing population of brown bears. The habitat includes two abandoned clarifier tanks that are 14 x 17 feet and .75 of an acre respectively.

The bears under the care of the non-profit organization are orphaned or have been rescued. The Fortress of the Bear is also Sitka’s largest private recycler, dedicated to using local dairy produce and bakery products as well as out-dated produce for feeding its bears. In the winter, the site is open Wednesdays – Sundays from 1000H to 1600H. In the summer, operating hours are extended from 0900H – 1800H. Those interested in visiting the Fortress of the Bear should arrange for transportation in advance.
