Dubbed as the largest winter festival in the whole of North America, the Fur Rendezvous Festival in Alaska celebrates the long winter?s end and start of spring with days of activities and festivities.

Also known as Fur Rondy, this annual winter festival is held every late February in Anchorage, Alaska. It traces its roots from the ?fur rendezvous? of fur trappers in Alaska, who would meet and exchange their products. The festival began in 1935 in Anchorage as a way of bringing the then 3,000 population together during wintertime. The first event was a three-day sports tournament called the Winter Sports Carnival. As the population grew, so did the festival?s scope and popularity.

The modern Fur Rondy now has over 100 years, including staple winter sports such as skiing and sled dog racing. Other significant events include the Rondy Grand Prix, Snow Sculpture competition and World Ice Bowling Championship.
