In the 1940?s, Arleen Kranich, together with other Homer Women?s Club members, helped establish the Homer Public Library by collecting funds from residents as well as obtaining free books from Washington D.C. It also received $50 as operating funds from the state government. By 1979, the library had outgrown its tiny quarters in an old schoolhouse and was relocated to a newly structured 3,500 square ft. facility at Pioneer Avenue.

In 2002, the Friends of the Homer Public Library - a non profit organization - together with the Library Advisory Board, a citizens group, worked on the New Library Project to accumulate funds for the expansion and remodelling of the library, which was completed in September 2006. At present, those who wish to help fund the library?s future improvements may avail of the library?s ?copper fish? with a $100 donation.
