Kennecott is a former mining area in the state of Alaska. It was accidentally discovered in the year 1900 by Jack Smith and Clarence Warner, who just wanted to graze on a green area they found in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area. It turns out that the ?green? was a part of a mountain of copper ore, so it led them to start the Chitina Mining and Exploration Company.
The Kennecott quickly became a mining area, producing the richest known concentration of copper in the whole planet. According to a US Geological Survey geologist, the ore found in the area contained 70% of copper with traces of gold and silver. This allowed the quick development of the area.
Today, the Kennecott is best known for being a tourist destination. It is also an acclaimed National Historic Landmark.
