In a way, the building of the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church is a miracle in itself. In 1890, people from all walks of life bonded together to complete the church. The group was made of Tingits ? the state?s native population, Serbian miners, and town locals as well as individuals from both Orthodox and non-Orthodox communities.

In 2009, the church won the 10 Most Endangered Grant of AAHP. The prize funds were then used to hire Westwind Woodworking?s Don Corwin to take charge of the installation of the church?s brand new gutters. Interestingly enough, Corwin also won in the same year the Restoration Project Award also from AAHP but dealing with a different project. Besides the said installation, the church also benefited from having additional remodelling for its exterior.
