Located within the Katmai National Park and Preserve is the stunning Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. The site is both historic and a natural wonder, and is a very interesting area to see and learn about.

The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes got its name from the National Geographic Society?s Robert F. Griggs who described the site to have ?tens of thousands of smokes curling up from its fissured floor.? This event was caused by the Novarupta eruption in 1912, which caused fumaroles to vent steam from the ash.

Today, the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is one of the highlights of the Katmai National Park and Preserve. It can be reached by a bus through the Books Camp, which is the only road in park.
