The Barringer Crater is the very first confirmed crater in the world. Located in Winslow, Arizona, it was named after Daniel M. Barringer, who is the businessman and mining engineer that first suggested that the huge gap on the ground is made by an iron-metallic meteorite. His company, Standard Iron Company, started research on the origins of the craters in 1903 and 1905, which was also around the time that they were granted a patent signed by Theodore Roosevelt.

The Barringer Crater is believed to have been created 50,000 years ago. Thanks to the natural Arizona climate, it has been preserved quite well despite the years.

The Barringer Crater measures 4000 feet in diameter and 570 feet deep. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1967.
