The Bisbee 1000 is an annual fundraiser and fitness event held every October in Bisbee, Arizona. Since its inception in 1990, it has become a crowd magnet. In 2009, the event earned a much-deserved feature in Runners World Magazine October issue.

The Bisbee 1000 was created by Save Our Stairs, a non-profit organization to help the historic mining town of Bisbee to raise some funds for the repairs and preservation of several concrete stairs that linked its streets. The stairs date back to the Great Depression and was designed after the paths treaded by mules during the copper mining years in the 1900?s.

During the event, participants will meet by the courthouse near the Iron Man statue and will go up to 9 sets of stairways around the city. The stairways consist of 1035 steps. But, while the participants are going up the stairs, musicians will entertain them as they are deliberately positioned around the stairs. Another crowd pleaser feature of Bisbee 1000 is the Ice Man competition, wherein participants are required to go up 155 steps while moving a block of ice that weighs 10 lbs. using traditional metal tongs.
