The Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge is a total of about 860,000 acres that run right along the borders of Mexico, particularly the southwest of Ajo. It was built way back in 1939 and its unique refuge offers protection to a variety of animals and plants that are already considered indigenous to the place. The term Cabeza Prieta are Spanish words that are called as Black Head. It serves as reference to one of the major mountains right at the western side of the refuge.

Cabeza Prieta has a total of seven mountain rangers and even shares a certain part of its own border with Sonora in Mexico. This is the perfect place to enjoy activities like photography, hiking, camping and even just simply wildlife observation.
