Jefferson Davis, the Secretary of War in 1856, came with an amazing idea to transfer freights and people from the desert through the use of camel. He was able to realize the idea and transported 70 beasts including Hi Jolly. However, when the Civil War started and Davis changed jobs, the project was abandoned and the camels were set to fend themselves in the desert in Quartzsite.

Hi Jolly was able to live until 70 years old and died in 1902. The locals became very find of him that they built a special tomb made in quartz and multi colored wood. Thirty-three years later, The Arizona Highway Department improved Hi Jolly?s tomb by cementing it with a brass plaque with his story engraved on it.

Now, tourists have to pass through the busy flea market in Quartzsite before reaching Hi Jolly?s tomb.
