Mission San Jose de Tumacacori
|
Rating: None |
The Tumacacori mission was originally on the east side of the Santa Cruz River. The name Tumacacori (two-mah-cock-cori) is believed to have come from two native American words (O'odham) chu-uma and kakul that translates to rocky flat place. The mission was moved to the west side of the river where it is now in 1751. The mission has not been restored, just preserved and gives us a snapshot into the Spanish colonial era of what is today Arizona.
