The hot summer in Arizona offers an unlikely cool treat ? a sea of wildflowers covering the face of the Picacho Peak, Arizona?s famous 1,500-foot mountain. This rock formation is the centerpiece of the Picacho State Park, a 3,747-acre park that surrounds the peak and nearby lands. Picacho means ?big peak? in Spanish.

The park is famous for its wildflowers that cover the summit during mid-March to early April. The peak has a small flat space that can be accessed via two trail heads. Cables and guided catwalks aid the hikers who dare scale these heights and behold the beauty of the lands below.

The park is near the site of the Battle of Picacho Peak, a battle fought in the Arizona Territory during the Civil War. A reenactment of the battle is held here every year. The park also offers standard state park activities such as camping and nature photography.
