The United States has its own share of geographical oddities. In the desert region at the border of Arizona and Utah, in the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, a rock formation is famous among hikers, adventurers and landscape photographers. They call this formation “The Wave”.

The Wave is a wave-like sandstone rock formation that dates back to the Jurassic era, around 190 million years ago. The peculiar shape and colorful layers produce a spectacular view, especially when artistically captured in a photograph. Experienced “surfers” of the Wave recommend taking pictures of it around midday, when the central area is shadowless, thus the naked beauty of the rocks is completely exposed. For more dramatic pictures, early mornings and late afternoons are the best time to take shots.

However, due to the fragile nature of the rock formation, the site is protected by park rangers and entry is restricted to only few visitors a year.
