Little Rock Zoo, the only public zoo of the state of Arkansas, is home to more than 725 animals from over 200 species. Covering an area of 33 acres, the zoo is split into four zones ? North, South, East, and West. The animals are spread throughout the zoo according to their environment, species or diet. This setup ensures that animals are comfortable and not stressed in its new home, as well as to fit animal?s needs. The Little Zoo Rock is a great experience for both adult and children with its extensive list of exhibits, programs and events. Aside from the animals, the zoo also features a children?s farm, carousel, and various exciting activities such as the Breakfast with Animals series. Little Zoo Rock also offers summer camps and educational opportunities galore.

Founded in 1926 with just two animals, an abandoned timber wolf and a circus-trained bear, the zoo has since grown not only in its number of animals but also in its buildings and facilities. The first Little Rock Zoo buildings were made of local stone and built in 1930s and home to newly acquired occupants ? primates, reptiles, birds and big cats. Most of these buildings are still in use, though the cat house was renovated into a restaurant with the feel of an African style lodge. Today, the zoo is its own department under the city and is still expanding. The zoo?s latest addition is an African penguin exhibit which opened on March 5, 2011.

The Little Rock Zoo offers an exotic world for visitors to explore ? experience the magnificence of elephants and rhinos, stick your necks out at the giraffe exhibit, be amazed at the strength and beauty of lions, tigers and jaguars, monkey around at various primate exhibits, or slither around the reptile house. Visitors should also visit the new Lorikeet Landing exhibit where they can feed these beautiful birds nectar.
