Also known as Knapp Mounds or the Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park, the Toltec Mounds is the home of Arkansas? tallest prehistoric mounds that are still quite intact today. This site is believed to have been occupied by Native American groups with the Plum Bayou culture from 600 to 1050 AD.

The Toltec Mounds got its name from the initial belief of the land owner, Mrs. Gilbert Knapp, in the mid to late 1900s that the site was once the home of the Toltecs of Mexico. Archaeologists from the Smithsonian Institutions Bureau of American Ethnology proved otherwise and concluded that the mounds were made by the ancestors of that time?s generation of Native Americans.

The Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
