Dark. Mysterious. Infamous.
Floating majestically in the middle of San Francisco Bay, this island known as “The Rock” has made a reputation during its existence. It started as a lighthouse, then became a military fort and military garrison. It earned its notoriety when it was converted into a federal prison in 1933. Because of its secluded and perilous nature, The Rock became the residence of some of the country’s most notorious convicts and big-name criminals.
Alcatraz was closed down in 1963, but its reputation lived on in the minds of the people. The Rock became a pop culture favorite, appearing in movies, documentaries, tv shows and written materials. In the present, it is home to several species of flora and fauna, and a popular tourist attraction.
