The Benicia State Recreation Area is a state park in Benicia, California. It is commonly confused with the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park, but this one is actually a tidal park wetland that was created to protect the natural habitat from destruction or development.
The Benicia State Recreation Area traces its roots back to 1775 when the area was discovered by explorers Don Juan Manuel de Ayala and Don Jose de Canizares. It was acquired by the state in 1967 after being used for farming and ranching by previous owners.
Today, the Benicia State Recreation Area is home to the Southampton Bay Wetland Natural Preserve, which makes up the 70 percent of its 720 acres. Wildlife viewing is the most popular activity at the site although you can also enjoy hiking, fishing, and camping at the site.
