The California State Indian Museum is a museum and a historic park in Sacramento, California. Also known as the State Indian Museum Historic Park, the site is focused on chronicling the colorful prehistoric past of the state.
Opened in 1940, the California State Indian Museum was designed to preserve and tell of the story of the native peoples that was the original inhabitants in what people know now as the state of California. Originally the home of about 150 distinct tribal groups with at least 64 different languages, the state is considered to have one of the largest and most diverse prehistoric population in all of the Western hemisphere.
The California State Indian Museum features displays and exhibits about these groups and their stories.
