Originally, the farm was a ranch measuring 36-acre with a toll road that provided accessibility for timber haulers and travelers. During the early Gold Rush days back in 1887, Daffodil Hill served as a regular junction point for teamsters lugging lumber towards the Argonaut and Kennedy Mines, and for travelers heading east on the Amador-Nevada Wagon Road, now known as Highway 88. It was during this year that Arthur McLaughlin and his wife, Lizzie, started growing bulbs of daffodil during their spare time. Both were migrants who trudged New York and Ohio.

Today, the homestead is encircled with an assortment of not less than 300 varieties of daffodils. Despite this overwhelming number, the McLaughlins never cease to enhance the farm?s landscape by continuing to grow at most 6,000 new bulbs of daffodil annually. An estimated 300,000 bulbs of the flower currently cover the whole of Daffodil Hill.

Nature is by all means the farm?s abundant provider. Daffodil Hill is situated in a location of over 3,000 feet in elevation, a suitable site for floriculture. Furthermore, the rustic air of the beautiful alpine hill ornamented with an old barn, pine trees, old mining and farming tools, and wagon wheels never falter in captivating the enthusiasm of nature lovers.

Nature is also the key determinant of the farm?s visiting schedule. Spring is the most favorable time to wander around Daffodil Hill. During this season, it is open from Monday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, inevitable bad weather can close the farm.
