The George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area is a state park and recreation area in Hilmar, California. It features the Merced River, which surrounds the park, making it both a backdrop and main attraction at the same time.

Located 20 miles south of Modesto, California, the George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area is best known for being an excellent campground. People troop to the site to spend nights communing with nature. Filled with trees, the park is also a great place for picnicking. Wildlife viewing is also popular, as there are plenty of birds around. Visitors can also take a dip in the river, as well as go fishing and hiking.

Unlike other state parks, the George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area follows a first-come first-served camping policy, so try to arrive early if you want to grab a spot here.
