The Animas Museum building used to be the Animas City School. It is a 3-story sandstone structure, constructed in 1904-1905, that served as an elementary school within the Durango school system until 1967 when the school closed.

Today, the 1904 building is transformed to become the Animas Museum, which is owned and operated by the La Plata County Historical Society. It aims to keep the history and culture of La Plata County accessible to the present and future generations. Through its museum, exhibits, educational programs, and advocacy, it is able to promote the public awareness toward its collective and significant past.

The Animas Museum also offers programs suitable for all ages. It provides more knowledge through its research library and photo archives.
