According to records, the Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park’s site was originally under water for about 20 million years. It then became a dense jungle, similar to those found in Africa, up until a million years ago.

Named after the endangered Gordonia tree, which can be found at the site, and the Altamaha River found nearby, the Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park is a popular family destination.
