The Mesa Verde National Park got its name from Mesa which is a Spanish term for green table. It features the lives of the ancient people of Pueblo who made the place their home for more than 700 years. At present day, the park has about 4,000 archaeological sites which also include about 600 cliff dwellings. The sites are known to be several of the most preserved ones in the US.

You can purchase tour tickets if you want to go to the Cliff Palace within the park where you will be guided by Rangers on a seasonal basis. This will render you the chance to hike right into the ancient Puebloan sites. You can get to buy the tickets at the visitor center of the Far East View.
