The Steve Canyon Statue is a tribute to the hero of the World War II Sunday comic strip when the Swuirrel District of Idaho Springs was destroyed in 1947. The statue was built by the Indiana Limestone Company and cost $12,000. The life-sized monuments was transferred to Colorado and was formally dedicated in July 8, 1950. The plaque of the statue says, ?The United States Treasury salutes Steve Canyon and through him, all American cartoon characters who serve the Nation. ?

The comic character of Steve Canyon is created by cartoonist Milton Caniff.
