The Submarine Force Library & Museum was established in the 1950?s by the Electric Boat Co. Then, it only had a modest collection of records, books, and historic artefacts. It moved to its present location in 1985. At present, the museum has three primary facilities: the museum, its library and archival section, and finally, the USS Nautilus, a historic Navy ship also known as the SSN-571. Found next to them are four other submersibles of unique designs: the Japanese HA-8 mini-submarine (Type A), the 1955 X-1 midget submarine of the Navy, and finally, an Italian and MK VII SDV or swimmer delivery vehicle.
Popular outdoor displays found at the site include a ?41 for Freedom ballistic-missile submarine, a Polaris Program monument, and the full sail of SSBN-598 or the USS George Washington.
