The Tunxis State Forest measures about 9,152 acres of land which are all divided into various sections of same sides of the Barkhamsted Reservoir. It has large parts of forests which are unbroken which are found in the towns of Hartland and Granby too. Even before it was even purchased in 1923, majority of the area is already in heavy forest. It is considered way unique than the rest of the other parts in the state. Now, it is part of a huge wildland that is adjacent to the Metropolitan District Commission. It is a major supplier of drinking water.

A lot of wildlife can be seen right at Tunxis. It was one of the few states where you can find lots of back bear and moose. It has been constantly improved for its further health and become a lot more diverse. It is also an ideal spot for recreation especially for those who like the outdoors. From hikers, cross country skiers, and hunters, almost everyone would find something good to do in the area.
