Built in the early 18th century, the Amstel House was originally owned by Dr. John Finney, who was then the most prosperous landowner in town. The house was made more impressive by having one of the town?s first houses equipped with fanlights and possessing a grand central hallway. Today, visitors may still view its original woodwork.

The Amstel House is also rich in history, having a governor as one of its owners as well as having numerous famous visitors over the years, including President George Washington and one of the state?s signers for the Declaration of Independence. The children?s book, the Green Umbrella, was also based on one of the house?s legendary features.

For lovers of history, make sure you also pay a visit to the two other popular historic sites in the area, the Old Library Museum and the Dutch House.
