This fort has been the stuff of historical accounts, legends and even ghost stories. Fort Delaware is a military defense facility located in Pea Patch Island at the mouth of the Delaware River. This fort had served several functions since its establishment in 1813. It was used during the American Civil War as a concentration camp for Confederate prisoners of war, political enemies and criminals.

The state of Delaware got the fort from the federal government in 1947. Now, the fort stands as a living history museum and recreational area. It is part of the Fort Delaware State Park, which encompasses the whole Pea Patch Island. Entry to the island is possible via ferryboats. Visitors can witness several events held in the fort, such as the annual “Escape from Fort Delaware” triathlon, a tri-discipline endurance and sports event that traces the route taken by 52 people who escaped the Civil War Prison.
