Delaware earned its nickname “The First State” because it was the first state to sign the Constitution of the United States. One of the signer of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence was George Read. He was one of the primary advocates of independence and his efforts enabled Delaware to become the first signatories to the most important event in the history of the nation. George Read’s house is located in New Castle, Delaware.

The house was believed to have been constructed around 1730. It is an L-shaped house with two and half stories. The front part of the house was later added before 1769, with further addition done in 1850. The house used to overlook the Delaware River. Because of Stonum’s longevity and historic importance, it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
