Museums and galleries dot the cityscape of the nation?s capitol Washington, D.C. The Art Museum of the Americas, or AMA, is an art museum dedicated to collecting, preserving and displaying works of art, both modern and contemporary, from Latin America and Caribbean. The museum was opened in 1976 by the Organization of American States, or OAS.

The museum?s first collection grew from a work donated in 1949 by Brazilian neo-realist Portinari. After establishing an acquisition fund, the collections blossomed through purchase from other groups and individuals, and direct donations from collectors and artists.

Today, the museum?s collections contain about two thousand paintings, photographs, installations, illustrations, sketches, and sculptures dated from the early 20th century until the present, all hailing from South America and Caribbean. Aside from public exhibits, the museum also holds art lectures, workshops, and speaking engagements.
