Considered one of the most beautiful Washington DC cemeteries, the Oak Hill Cemetery had been incorporated in 1849 and is now over 150 years old.

The Oakhill Cemetery features designs of Romantic Movement that were typical in the 19th century, which includes an informal English garden. People managing Oak Hills Cemetery are now hard at work in a historical restoration project for the site, focusing mostly on preserving ancient oak trees in the area as well as dealing with the cemetery’s surface runoff system. Preservation efforts would also focus on restoring the Gatehouse, the Renwick Chapel, and other circa 1849 maintenance buildings to their former glory.

It had been founded by William Corocan, a banker and the founder of what’s now known as The Riggs National Bank. He had contributed in preventing the Union Treasury from experiencing bankruptcy during the Mexican War.
