The Shakespeare Theatre Company is a regional theatre company dedicated to becoming the nation?s premier in classical theatre by centering on works with complex characters, substantial themes and heightened language written by Shakespeare, his contemporaries and those playwrights he influenced such as Euripides, Ibsen and Wilde. Located in Washington, D.C., the theatre company is a member of the League of Resident Theatres and produces eight mainstage plays annually in its two downtown theatres.

The two downtown venues each serve their own purpose and showcase specific performances. The newer and larger Sidney Harman Hall seats 775 and presents local performing arts groups and nationally renowned organizations, as well as holds an annual Free For All performance and a recreation of a production from seasons past stage for free in August and September. The 451-seat Lansburgh Theatre is a classic proscenium stage reminiscent of a Greek Amphitheater and is host to a number of performing arts organizations including the Synetic Theatre and several main stage productions.

Founded in 1985 as the Shakespeare Theatre Company, it has since endeavored to be the nation?s leading force in the presentation and preservation of classic theatre. The theatre company?s aim is to adopt a modern approach to classic theatre through a skillful and imaginative American style that honors playwrights? language and intentions. With its two existing performance venue, the Shakespeare Theatre Company offers a broad range of works to audiences in the greater Washington area and across the nation. Aside from the performance spaces, the theatre company also maintains administrative offices, rehearsal studios and a costume shop in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Lobby gift shops are found at the Lansburgh Theatre and Sidney Harman Hall offering various clothing, jewelry, art, books and one-of-a-kind specialty items. Gift shops are open before performances and during intermission. Various neighborhood fine dining can also be found for light meals, snacks and assorted beverages.
