The Smithsonian in Washington D.C. holds an extensive collection of museum pieces, from historical remnants, artworks, space and science discoveries, and more. All these are kept in 19 different buildings and museums, which make it impossible to tour the Smithsonian in just a day. So for anyone who?s planning to visit here, it?s best to start off at the Smithsonian Institute or ?The Castle?.
Aptly named, the Smithsonian Castle houses the institution?s administrative offices and the Smithsonian Information Center. Here, visitors can find out more about the different museums and have an overview of what they?ll experience. Featured in this distinctive red sandstone building is an interactive video orientation about the history and progression of the institution. From here, guests can either plan their own tour or opt for a pre-arranged one by the foundation.

This Washington D.C. landmark was named after its benefactor, James Smithson, a British mineralogist and chemist, whose inheritance funded the initial founding of the institution.
