As an honor to the men who gave their lives for the saving of women and children during the Titanic tragedy, the Titanic Memorial was constructed. It’s a 13-foot tall statue of a man with outstretched arms, erected through the efforts of the Women’s Titanic Memorial Association. It is located at P Street SW near Fort Lesley J. McNair. Designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the sculpture was presented to the public on May 26, 2931, by Helen Herron Taft, President Taft’s widow.
The Titanic Memorial was originally located at New Hampshire Avenue, but was later removed due to the construction of the Kennedy Center in the year 1966.Two years later, in 1968, the memorial was erected again on the place where it is located today.
