The Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park is a special swamp forest reserve that is widely referred to as the ?Amazon of North America?.

Located in area covering over twenty miles long and five miles wide, the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park contains the unique wildlife and vegetation of a true swamp forest. The geography of the area has been greatly influenced by the continuous flow of fresh water and as such, clean fresh water is referred to as the single most important resource to maintaining the park?s beauty and biodiversity.

The park features a variety of habitat types ranging from wet swamps to prairie systems on drier islands. A good demonstration of this variety is the coexistence of bald cypress trees and royal palms in the same canopy, which is unique to this forest.
